Final Post

I didn't do a whole lot of lab work. The auditorium could be counted as that i guess, but other than that it was just researching in the books, taking notes on them, and then building the speakers. Building the speaker was definitely the new physics part, because I got to learn how everything in a speaker is connected and how it works. Mine turned out great by the way

My goal was very simple. Build a set of speakers that work and sound good. This was a very basic goal that involved a lot of preparing and it was fun as well. I don't think any changes are necessary

For our work outside of the classroom, some of it involved taking the notes on those books. However, going to meniscus and building the speakers was really fun.

I think I deserve an A on this project. I took very good notes on the books, I tested the 5 speakers and uploaded everything to posterous, and I built the speakers and they work great! I plan on getting to an auditorium soon and testing it for dead spots, so once I get that done then I think I deserve the A. If for some reason I don't get to doing that, then I deserve a B+. But for now, plan on the A.

Progress Report

My speakers are finished! You already knew that, but I thought I'd put
it in my report anyway. On saturday, me, Mouw, Kevin, and Luke all
went to Meniscus. Me and Mouw worked together to finish our speakers
because we were in the exact same spot. So first we went into the shop
and we put together out cabinets. He (Mark) showed us the procedure of
how to put them together and then me and Mouw both put ours together.
After all the wood glue set, we brought them out and installed the
crossovers. After that, we installed the tweeter and attached the
crossover to it, and then the woofer and attached the crossover to it.
I chose to do a 2-way because it was a little bit easier to make and
because it was less expensive. I still ended up spending about $170.
But the speakers are awesome! So it's all worth it. after installing
the woofer, tweeter and screwing everything in, we put our second
speakers together. After that we went into the next room and tested
them. They all worked very well. I'm excited to hook them up with Eric
Edewaards speakers for our room at college, its gonna be sweet! thanks
for the opportunity Mr. Peterson!

Progress Report

Yesterday, Mouw and I went to Meniscus to build our speakers (haha,
yeah I didn't really plan ahead at all. sorry about that.) we put the
crossovers together. We are both doing 2-way speakers and are each
doing 2 speakers. We finished the crossovers and looked through some
options for style of speaker and what kinds of wood we could use.
Saturday we are going back to finish everything. We estimate that it
will cost about 180 dollars total, give or take 20 bucks or so
depending on what kind of wood we use.
That's all for now

Progress Report

Ok, so I've taken notes on both of those books: Designing, Building,
and Testing your own Speaker System, and Making the Connection.
I've tested 5 different speakers and uploaded a table and graph of the results
We just have to build the speakers. We (M and Alex) are going to
Meniscus tomorrow (Wednesday, May 13) to buy our parts and build the
speakers. I'm hoping to talk to a friend of mine from church to get
some wood for the cabinet. Otherwise, we will see if we can go to the
woodshop with Adam sometime later this week to build the cabinet
there.

Procedure

Testing the speakers was actually quite simple:
1. Gather supplies: decibel meter, 5 different speaker brand items, a computer
2. Test one of the speakers (make sure the room is quiet) by putting
the decible meter about a meter from the speakers
3. repeat step 2 for each Hertz level
4. repeat step 3 for each speaker or set of speakers
5. record all data in computer
6. make a table and a graph
7. post all data to posterous

D, B, and T your own speaker system: pg 117 - end

-When making speakers, keep in mind 2 things about the area they will be used in
   - actual dimensions
   - acoustical size
-Make them according to your musical tastes
-Position your speakers according to your room size, shape, and
acoustical ability
-When balancing your speakers, symmetry is key
-Speaker tests
   - Listening test - put different types of music in and see what
it sounds like
   - Hiss Test - listen without anything playing and turn the volume
up to see how much static there is, if there is any.
   - Listen with just someone talking through the speakers. Adjust
all the different aspects of sound on the amplifier, like low, mid,
and high frequencies.
   - Test with a sound level meter
   - Use an equalizer

D, B, and T your own speaker system: pg 87 - pg 116

-Woofers, midranges, and tweeters should be combined in such a way
that they cover the entire range of frequencies without damaging any
of them or sacrificing sound quality.
-L-Pad – a device with which you change the balance of crossover networks.
-Crossover components are ideally placed outside of the speaker
cabinet so you can change them.
-Contour network – A network that shapes the speaker's response curve
Filters can help to eliminate peaks in response curves.
